7 Things you should do Before a Boudoir Session

What to Do Before a Boudoir Session

Your boudoir session is booked but you still don’t know exactly how you should prep for the big day.  Today we have seven things that you should do before your boudoir session.  Following these seven rules will help you relax and get you ready for your important day.

1. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S REST

You want to look refreshed before your boudoir session.  Yes, you may have hired a hair and makeup artist, but being alert and well rested before you session is where you want to start.  When you are well rested you are also more relax which.  Being relaxed before your session is always a great idea.

2. DRINK WATER

Yes, I know this is cliché, but the last thing you want is to look dehydrated in your photos.  The skin is your largest organ and it needs water to survive.  Do yourself a favor and make sure you are hydrating yourself very well a week before your session.  Drink a cup of water first thing in the morning and right before you head to bed.

3. HAVE YOUR NAILS DONE

I know!  With all the planning, and purchasing the one thing that a lot of girls miss are the nails.  We use our hand everyday and take them for granted.  Even if you don’t like to get faux nails nor have they painted make sure you have them manicured and polished to least a natural color.  I am very hard on my hands so when I get a mani-pedi I always ask for the natural pink clear coat.  It’s typically the clear pink they use for French manicures. This version of clear makes your look more natural and healthy!

4. MAKE SURE YOU TRY ON YOUR OUTFITS BEFORE THE SESSION

I am a person who is 110% guilty of buying off the rack.  You know what ended up happening?   Over spending on at least 50% of my wardrobe that didn’t fit correctly.  What at waste of time and money.  Once I started trying on clothes I started saving A TON of money… and buyer’s remorse.  I say all this to say… try on the lingerie before you buy it.  Make sure it’s going to match your heels and it looks the way you want to on your body.  When lingerie is ill fitting you may not feel as confident so make sure it fits exactly the way you want it too.

5. REMOVE THE TAGS FOR YOUR CLOTHES

I know!  It sounds like a no brainer, but you would not believe how many times I have had to photoshop tags out of photos.  Again, removing the small things like tags takes a little longer and really unnecessary work on the photo editors’ behalf.  We like to get everything right in camera to avoid any additional photoshop or airbrushing.

6. HAVE YOUR WARDROBE READY AND PACKED

Again the last thing you want to do is rush the day of your session.  The day before (if not two days before) make sure you pack everything you are interested shooting in.  It’s better to have too many outfits than not enough.  When you pack a day or two early this gives you time to think about other things you may want to bring.  This all happens to us, when we gather our things in a hurry we tend to forget items.   The last thing you want to do is forget to bring that one important prop you needed for your photos.

7. BRING PHYSICAL PHOTOS OF THE HAIR AND MAKEUP LOOK YOU WANT

I cannot express enough how important this is.  My dad used to say this John Lennon quote all the time, “Life is what happens when you’re making other plans.”  Hair and makeup artist are super busy during the week so while you may have emailed them the photos beforehand of what you are looking for I would also suggest you bring a copy of the photo with you and really discuss your needs  and make sure you are getting the look of what you want.  Now most artists cannot copy completely, but they will use the photo as inspiration for what you are looking for.

Doing these seven things before your boudoir session will help you in have a successful session that will cause you to relax and look amazing in your photos!

8 Things to Bring to Your Boudoir Session

8 Things to Bring to your boudoir session, Dallas Boudoir

Another common question I get asked is, “What should I bring to my boudoir session?”  Well, today I’m going to give you you 8 tips that will set you up for a sexy and successful boudoir session.

1.  YOUR A GAME!

Bring your A game to your boudoir session!  That means staying hydrated and getting a great nights rest.  Last month I wrote a post called 7 Ways to feel Comfortable before a Boudoir Session.  This blog post is imperative because it will give you the tools you need to bring your A game for a success boudoir shoot.

2. LINGERIE THAT FITS YOUR BODY PROPERLY

In my piece on 7 Ways to Feel Comfortable before a Boudoir Session I suggested to try on your lingerie before you get to your boudoir session.  The last thing you want is ill fitting clothes for such an important occasion.  Most lingerie shops and boutiques will measure you for free to make sure you are purchasing the right lingerie pieces that fit your body correctly.  They will also have personal shoppers that will give you a second opinion and only suggest pieces that will flatter your body.

3. BRING SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT

If you are doing your boudoir session as a gift for a loved one then bring something of significance to that person.  If your partner is an athlete or is into a particular sports team then wear his favorite team jersey.  If he’s a fireman bring his helmet and suspenders.  Or if he does a certain pose that’s an inside joke to you and him then make sure you do that during your session.  This is something that is going to be sacred between you two so make sure you include him in… even if he’s not physically there.

4. BLING BLING

In Texas we love our Bling!  Wearing bling to a boudoir session is a must!  Big gaudy pieces always photograph well and gives the photos a taste of luxury, especially if you are going for a full on glam look.  Chandelier earrings are also a great form of bling.  There is something sexy and sophisticated about chandelier earrings in photographs.   They really step up the luxe factor.

5. BLACK AND NUDE THONGS

Bringing a pair of black and nude thongs to your boudoir session is a must if you plan on wearing lingerie provided to you by the boudoir studio.  Therefore, if you use one of our pieces we ask that you wear a thong between your body and our clothes.  We suggest you wear either nude our black depending on the color of the lingerie piece you wear.

6. BLACK CLOSED TOED PUMPS

Wearing black closed toed pumps to your boudoir session is always a classic move.  I suggest the heel be, at the very least, 3 inches high.  Be to be honest, any heel 4 inches or higher is better because it really leans out the legs and makes your bum pop even more.

7. RUBBER BANDS AND BOBBY PINS

When you come in for your boudoir session always bring extra rubber bands and bobby pins that match your current hair color.  For some reason clients always need one or both of these for their session.  Never fails.

8. CLEAR DEODORANT

Wearing clear deodorant is essential to your boudoir session.  Part of the light airbrushing is evening skin tone… and typically the skin located in the armpit tends to be shades darker than the rest of your body.  Wearing clear deodorant to your boudoir session will eliminate bar residue under your armpits making airbrushing more even in post production.   Furthermore wearing clear deodorant eradicates the problem of getting deodorant on your body, lingerie, and the sets.

Don't Leave Home Without These Things!

Bringing these 8 essential items to your boudoir session will not only set you up for a win but makes you calm because you will have less to worry about.  With so much going on there is no need for add stress.

6 Excuses to Sneak out of the House... for a Surprise Boudoir Session

6 Real Excuses to Sneak Out the House for a Boudoir Session

“I am SO excited for my boudoir session, but I need an excuse to sneak out of my house as this is a surprise anniversary present for my husband.  Do you have any suggestion on what I should say?”

“How can I sneak out of the house for a boudoir session without my husband finding out?”   Is probably one of the common questions I get asked by clients who are hosting a boudoir session as a secret present for a significant other.

While I do not advocate lying to your partner I think sometimes we can make excuses, especially if they are the greater good.  I’ve had some clients come up with some creative ideas and today I want to share with you five excuses that will buy you a numbers of hours out of the house for your boudoir session.

1. Schedule Your Session When You Know He’s Busy

Many couples know their partners routine by heart and because of that can anticipate what they are doing and when they are going to be home on particular days.  For example, my father would play basketball every Saturday from 9AM to 2PM and then we would hang out at the park another hour so he could speak with his friends before we all headed home.  That was six solid hours we were out of the house.  What my mom did on those Saturdays I still have no idea.  However, anticipate his schedule and schedule your boudoir session around that.

Does he spend Sunday with his parents?  Or does he have an old friend from High School coming into town for the weekend?  Does he spend a certain day of the week meeting up with his boys and playing video games or catching up at the bar with them?  Know his schedule and anticipate what he’s going to be doing so you can go to a session without him getting wind of your surprise.

  • Cons: His plans may fall through and opt to hang out with you instead.  It’s a good idea to have a contingency plan in place just in case things go awry.
  • Pros: No need to make up a story about what you’re doing because he will probably be too occupied with his own schedule.

2. Girl’s Day

Tell your man that you are having a girls day.  Most men respect the sanctity of the sisterhood so there will probably be very little questioning.  If he does ask for details explain to him that you are planning on getting a late lunch and then seeing a movie (pick a long movie that you know he will have no interest in).  Informing him that you will be seeing a movie will eliminated a need to call or text you since he will know you won’t be looking at your phone.

  • Cons: Your man may be a movie buff and invite himself to the movie section of your day.  If that is the case tell him that Cindy (Insert your BFFs name here) is currently going through a tough time and just needs a friend.  This will ensure that he won’t ask any additional questions or invite himself along.  Just make sure to tell Cindy that you will be using her as an excuse.  The last thing you want is him calling/texting Cindy to give her his condolences and Cindy responding back extra confused.
  • Pros: There is probably very little chance of him barging in on your girl time so this will be a solid excuse.

3. Brunch

This is a lot like the girl's day, but you can use the excuse of brunch if you need to get out of the house earlier in the day.  Brunch gives you a solid 5 hours to host a boudoir session.

This plan will work because there is even less of a chance of your man calling you because he will know you will be out with your girls.

Cons: Now you have to let a number of ladies know your secret.  We know the more people you let in on the covert mission the more likely it is for someone to slip up and ruin your surprise.

Pros: There is only a VERY a small chance that he may call you.  However, you can actually have brunch with your girls after the session.  Especially since you will be dolled up you will look extra glam and when you get home you will have a valid excuse for the amazing hair and makeup.  Plus if you’re looking extra hot there won’t be too many questions after you walk in the door.

4. Getting Your Hair Done

It’s no secret that it can take HOURS for your hair to get done at a hairstylist.  Most stylists are juggling two or three other clients and this typically adds on to your time.  Let him know that you are getting your hair done and tell him that later that evening that you want to have a night out on the town. This gives you reason to be very glammed up.

  • Cons: he drops by the salon to see you get your hair done and you’re not there.  If that happens tell him you went to see a new girl.  It’s not like you won’t have valid proof.
  • Pros:  You don’t have to scrub the beautiful makeup off or wash your gorgeous hair.  You already look amazing AND you get a date the end of the night! Sounds like a win to me!

5. Spa Day with the Girls

Maybe someone is getting married or one of your girls is having a milestone birthday party.  Whatever the case maybe tell him you are going to treat this friend to a girls spa day.  Don’t give him too many details about where you’re going or how long you are going to be.  Just let me know you are doing it because it’s Cindy birthday (she’s the best isn’t she) and you want to treat her.

  • Cons: He may text you to see what you’re up to.  So you need to have an idea of how a spa works and let him know what you are doing… or about to do at the spa.  One of my clients actually had to do this because her hubby would text her every hour to 90 minutes.  You will also have to wash all that beautiful hair and makeup off so it really looks like you went to a spa.  I know.  Sucks!
  • Pros:  Being at a spa gives you a good reason as to why you didn’t answer your text right away.

6. Volunteer Work

This is a solid excuse you can use to leave the house with little to no suspicion.  Make sure you tell him that you are volunteering at a girls/women centric organization so he doesn’t invite himself to come.  Many women organizations don’t allow men to be around for a number of different reasons so you won’t have to fear him wanting to join.

  • Cons: You will most likely have to wash all your hair and clean your makeup off to not garner any questions.
  • Pros: This gives you a valid reason to be out of the house for an unlimited amount of hours and a good reason why you didn’t answer your phone/text when he called to see how you’re doing.

So There You Go!

I hope these six excuses to sneak out the house for a boudoir session helped you!  Again I don’t promote lying, but you are doing something for your beau so I hardly think he will count this against you.

In the comments below let me know what additional excuses you can come up with to get out of the house.

If I can get at least give good reasons I will create a second blog post!

The weekends get booked way faster than the week so if you only have availability during on the weekends I suggest calling ASAP to secure the date preferred.

7.)    Who should do my Hair and Make-up for a Boudoir Session?

I’m just going to be honest here.  Do not do your own hair and makeup before your session.  Check out my post that gives you 6 reasons hiring a makeup artist is the best move you can make.  Here at Wonderland Boudoir we have a rolodex of outstanding hair and makeup people in Dallas.  I only recommend Hair and Makeup artist I have personally worked.  This helps me ensure you are getting a quality experience.

8.)    Will you Photoshop me to *insert size here*

The quick and simple answer is no.  That’s the truth.  I do light airbrushing.  For example, if you have a pimple or blemish on your face, then of course, I will correct that.  I also color correct all my photos and will even out skin tone.  Depending on your on preference, I will remove stretch marks. However, if a lady is a size 22 and wants to be a size 2… then no I don’t do that.  In fact, I don’t do any real body modifications.  It’s not my style or aesthetic.  Wonderland Boudoir promotes natural beauty.

Every day in the media we get assaulted with false images of “real women.”  I’m here to help stop that and show that every woman can define their own meaning of beautiful.  I have a blog post that describes four actions I take to redefine beauty!

There are 7 great ways for you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera:

  1. Consultwith your Photography

  5. Practice the Poses You Want
  6. Don’t Forget WHY You’re Doing This
  7. Trust Yourself & Relax

Read the full post here to get detailed steps and ideas on how you can calms yourself before a boudoir session.

10.) I’m Nervous! How do I calm myself.

Simple.  Just trust in the process.  We at Wonderland Boudoir are here to help you achieve your best photos ever.  We aim to make you feel as beautiful as you look.  I have over 15 years of experience with shooting.  I will be there with you all the way to help you pose and make sure you get the best out of your session.

11.) Do you Post my Boudoir Pictures All over the Internet?

No.  The ladies you see in my pictures are women who have given me written permission to use their photos to showcase my work.  I won't lie, I would love to use your photos for my blog.  Showcasing women and telling their stories helps other women want to come up with the courage to shoot as well.

12.) Do you have Lingerie or should I Bring my Own?

We do have outfits, but I do encourage women to bring their own lingerie to make the session more unique to them.   I actually have another post coming up that helps outline what to bring for a boudoir session.  Always bring shoe!   Depending on what you are wearing a classic pair of black pumps is always a great idea.  The higher the better.  I always suggest at least 4 inch heels for dramatic effect.    The right pumps will make an outfit stand out and your more lean!

13.)   Who will See Me Take my Boudoir Photos?

Most of the time it’s just you and me in the room.  If you hire a hairstylist and makeup artist through me there is a good chance they will stay the entire shoot and touch you up as we go along.  However, they don’t stay in the room and watch the entire time… unless you want them too.  We are a professional group here to make you look and feel great!  We love to have fun and by the time your session is over you will forget how nervous you were to begin with.

14.) Should My Friends Go with me to my Boudoir Session?

No.  I’m just going to say it no… unless you are having a boudoir party.  Otherwise I do not recommend your friend/family member coming with you.  The reason being is when you get in that room with myself and your friend is there a lot of the times the clients starts worrying about what their friend is thinking.  This creates a focusing problem and could have a negative effect on your session because you aren't concentrating.  This is discouraging to both yourself and the photographer.  You will be safe and fine without a need to worry.  I get that a friend may be a safety blanket, but a boudoir session is such an intimate experience so it’s very important to concentrate without any potential distractions.

15.) Will you Hide my Cellulite/Scare/Birthmark/ *insert least flattering body part here*

Let’s be honest, we all have things about ourselves that we feel as though are less than perfect and we may not want one of those things shown.  When we speak on the phone I will take note of you’re the areas of the body you like to conceal and enhance.

16.)  Will you help me with Posing?

Yes!  Of course!  The average woman isn’t on the covers of Vogue magazine.  We will help you with posing your body to for optimal photos.  Not only will we tell you what to do, we will also pose in that same position so you can see firsthand what we want you to do.  At Wonderland Boudoir we are known for poses and angles so you can be sure that you will learn a lot from our session.

I also suggest checking out the Boudoir Divas from San Diego who have three amazing books that show the BEST photos for posing.  One of the books has 1500 boudoir poses images!!!!!!  Check out the books here!

17.)  How long does it take to get my Boudoir Photos Back?

If you don’t want any add-ons such as books or additional photos I try and have your photos done at least 14 days after our session.  However, if you want albums, additional books, or accordion books then it takes about 6 weeks to get back.  Most of our books are handcrafted in Italy so it’s very important that the books are made slowly and perfectly to last a lifetime.  We at Wonderland Boudoir only work with the best of the best to ensure that our clients receive a quality product.

When your photos and packages are ready we ask that you come back to the studio and pick everything up.  WE DO NOT MAIL ITEMS.   There have been too many times photos, usbs, and books have been lost in the mail and therefore we want to make sure you personally pick up your items so they are safe and secure.

18.) Explain a Typical Boudoir Session

At Wonderland Boudoir we have the client come in and have hair and makeup done (if that’s what you have chosen).  It takes about 90 minutes to have your hair and makeup done.  After our discussion with the hair and makeup artist on your wants and needs we then we pick out your wardrobe.  All of us have really great style (toot toot) so you are in great hands if you're unsure about any of your chooses.  After hair and makeup is completed and you have given your seal of approval of your hotness we then start the session.

After our session is over I will schedule a time where we can meet 14 days later so you can see your photos and pick the ones you want to keep forever!

19.) Do you Offer Group Parties?

Yes, we offer Boudoir Parties.  These are great for birthday parties, Girls' Night Out, and Bachelorette parties.  It’s a time to get pampered before you enjoy a night out on the town!

20.) Who Shouldn’t get a Boudoir Session Done?

At Wonderland Boudoir we believe that all women should have a session done.  However, if having boudoir photos done will hurt your career in some way then I suggest not having them done.  While we take EVERY SINGLE PRECAUTION to ensure that your photos never get out we cannot guarantee everything 100% in our digital world.  This is why it’s very important to considerate what may happen.  Our photos are tasteful and classic, but how far you want your session to go is really up to you.

21.) How long do you keep my photos on file? What If I want more photos on a later date?

We don’t have a strict time period on hand when we destroy photos of past clients boudoir photos, but do try and dispose of all photos after seven days.  We have a large number of clients come in so it’s very important that we have as much room as possible on our drives.

22.) Do You Guys do Couples Sessions?

Yes!  We love shooting couples who are in love and would like beautifully directed photos for years to come.

23.) How can I book a session?

Please check out our investment page! Please feel free to call us for additional questions and schedule a time to book!  You can contact us here!

5 Reasons to Hire a Professional Makeup Artist for youR Boudoir Shoot

6 Reason to Hire a Proffessional Makeup Artis for Boudoir, Engagement, or Weddings

“Do I really need to hire a make-up artist?   I do my own make up every day.”

This is a very common question/statement I get asked from clients.

Unless you’re a professional makeup artist yourself, the answer will…

ALWAYS.  BE.  YES.

Let me be honest with you.  When I have professional hair and make-up artist contact me to do a boudoir session with them 90% of the time they hire someone else to do it for them.

Why? …

..Because they understand the value in hiring a professional artist.

Today I’m going to give you 6 REAL reasons why you need to hire a professional makeup artist for your boudoir session.

1.) Investment

Jazzy Baptiste Pro MUA in Dallas, Wonderland Boudoir

Your boudoir session is an investment.  There aren’t many things in this life that go up in value after purchase, but a boudoir is one of them.  You paid for an amazing photographer and purchased the perfect lingerie and outfits for your session.  However, you are now considering cutting cost a little bit with hair and make-up by doing it yourself... or letting your cousin, sister, aunt (whoever) do your makeup because they do such a great job on themselves.  Doing makeup on you is not the same as doing it on someone else.  Let me tell you that paying the additional $100-$150 (depending on the boudoir studio) is well worth the price tag.

Great makeup enhances your boudoir photos.  Do you really want to take the risk of doing a reverse smokey eye and ombre lip on yourself if you have never done one before?  The day of your boudoir session is NOT the day to try your hand at applying false lashes or a makeup technique you have never done before.

I really wish I could attach photos of my clients who did their own make-up versus my girls who hired a make-up artist.  However, I do not want to put anyone on blast so I won’t do that, but there is a night and day difference between the women.

Most boudoir studios will have in-house or contracted hair and makeup artist they can recommend to you.  These professionals have typically worked with the photographer on a long term and ongoing basis and can anticipate the photographers shooting style and perfectly incorporate that with what you are wearing to the session.

At Wonderland Boudoir our makeup artists typically stay with us the entire length of your session.  Unlike many boudoir studios our makeup artist touches you up throughout your session to make sure you look flawless in each frame.

The last thing you want to do is love EVERYTHING about the photo EXCEPT your make-up.  You don’t want to regret doing the makeup yourself (or resenting your family member for doing a poor job)Boudoir sessions focus A LOT on the face.  Have complete confidence in your session by hiring a professional makeup artist.  The extra $100-$150 on a makeup artist will be a drop in the bucket when it comes to gorgeous photos and peace of mind.

2.) Quality

Alex MUA Dallas, Wonderland Boudoir

Makeup artist invest a lot of time and money into their craft.  They research different styles and know by heart the brands that will work best for not only your skin but for the overall photos.

Also, there is a quality to their work you will not find anywhere else.  Each makeup artist develops a style and skill that they call their own.  This is called passion.  The makeup they do for you is evidence of their skill and brand.   Essentially, you are a walking billboard for them.  If you are being photographed they NEVER want to do a bad job.  That’s why they put in so much time and effort to provide you with a quality result for your boudoir session.

3.) Professional Grade Makeup

Makeup Brushes, Wonderland Boudoir

All of the makeup artists that I have ever worked with apply high quality HD makeup for boudoir sessions.  For session such as boudoir, engagements, and weddings they use makeup that is more heavy and not for everyday use.  We aren’t talking drug store brands here.  No.  There is nothing wrong with anything you may have purchased at CVS, but if you are looking for Grade A flawless make-up your makeup artist is going to have it.

The brands makeup artist use for boudoir sessions is built to last for all day use and under hot lights.  Professional grade makeup takes real effort to remove.  You want something that will last the entirety of your session and even later into the day.

4.) Technique

Alana MUA in Austin, Wonderland Boudoir

Makeup artist are professionally trained and state certified. They know what they are doing.  They have techniques that we commoners can’t do.  Keep in mind that a photo a 2D image.  This means that everything is flat in a photo.  However, professional makeup artist know tricks to make your photo 3D.  They add color, highlights, and contouring to make our cheekbones, eye, and hair pop!  Let’s not forget the blending game!  There is nothing like a makeup artist that knows how to really blend!  Blending makeup is probably the most important technique that any artist can do and it’s the one that most people who aren’t makeup artist tend to forget.

5.) Photographers Hate Photoshop

Toni for Urban Jungle Photography Dallas Texas

Most photographers hate Photoshop.  They much prefer to get every last detail right in camera.   Yes, makeup is one of those details.  Many clients think that Photoshop is the be all end all, but Photoshop is a tool… not an answer.  In fact the photo of Toni to the right was one were the only two things I did was remove blemishes and make the color pop. That is all.  Before arriving to the boudoir studio Toni went to a celebrity MUA in Dallas to have her makeup done.  Let me tell you, the money she paid was well worth it because not only was the makeup perfect for her outfits, eyes, and face shape it also allowed her to receive her photos back much faster because I didn’t have to take the extra time to touch anything up on her face. Who doesn’t LOVE getting their photos back sooner than anticipated?

6.) Relieves Stress

Having a professional take care of your makeup alleviates the pressure of making sure you did it right.  While this is listed as the last reason it’s actually the number one reason you should hire a makeup artist to do your makeup for a boudoir session.

You have so much going on already… work, planning for your boudoir session, buying lingerie, and let’s not forget your personal life.  When you hire a professional makeup artist all you need to do is show up.

I always tell my clients to create a Pinterest board as inspiration for each look they want to do.  This helps you, me, and the makeup artist because it provides a visual idea of what you want your end result to be for your session.  Since a makeup artist can’t read your mind it’s important to send a visual idea of what you are looking to accomplish.

CONCLUSION

Hiring a professional makeup artist is an investment that you need for your boudoir session.  There is a quality and technique that professional makeup artist have that most people don’t because they haven’t studied the form.  Makeup artist use expensive high quality makeup that isn’t necessary for everday use but is necessary for your boudoir session. Photographers like to use as little Photoshop as possible for your session so it’s important to make sure your makeup is right in camera to help speed up the editing process which helps you get your photos back sooner.  The most important reason you need to hire a professional makeup artist is that it leaves you stress free.

In the comments below let me know if you have anymore questions about why you should hire a professional makeup artist for your session.

7 Ways to Feel Comfortable for Your Boudoir Session

7 Ways to Feel Comfortable Doing a Boudoir Session

I get it!  You want to do a boudoir session, but you are scared senseless about doing one.  You want to make the plunge, but don’t know how to calm your nerves.

Never fear!  I have seven ways for you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera and in your boudoir session.

1.  Consult with your Boudoir Photographer

The number one thing you need to do before a boudoir session is consult with your potential photographer.  Don’t just go online, see beautiful photos of gorgeous women, and then pay the deposit.  You will need to CALL the photographer and SPEAK to them (if you can’t meet with them in person).  Make sure you get a good vibe from them and see if they make you feel comfortable over the phone.  Make sure you ask the photographer detailed questions.  Even ask them the questions you think are silly but have been on your mind.  The photographer shouldn’t be bothered in the least bit with your questions because this is something that is really important to you and time should be taken to accurately answer any concerns you may have.  After speaking to your photographer they should make you feel more comfortable about your pending session.

2.   Hire a Professional Hairstylist and Makeup Artist

When booking a boudoir session hire a professional hairstylist and makeup artist (HMUA).  Don’t cut corners here!  You are already making an investment in a boudoir session just pay the extra $100-$150 (depending on the studio) for a professional HMUA.  Many women think they can do their own hair and makeup, but hair and makeup that you do for everyday life is WAY different than makeup you do for a professional shoot.

Two quick reasons why you need to hire pros:

  1. It takes the pressure off you.  It’s one less thing for you to worry about before your session.
  2. HMUA use professional grade styling tools and products for studio sessions.

You have been running around, working out, eating right, and buying clothes for this session.  The last thing you want to do is stress about how you’re going to do your own hair and makeup.  Leave it to a professional.

3.  Get your Nails Done Before a Boudoir Session

I CANNOT tell you how many times a woman has forgotten do her nails before a session.  Now you don’t need a French manicure or color polish in general but make sure your nails have at least a clear coating on them and are cut evenly.  Bad nails can easily break a photo.

4. Try on the Wardrobe Before Your Session

Trying on your boudoir outfits before your session will make you feel more confident.  The last thing you want to do is buy a piece of beautiful lingerie off the shelf and not try it on until your actual session.  That is just a potential recipe for disaster.  Don’t take that 50/50 chance of the piece not working out. A lot of companies will not let you return lingerie.

Two Quick Boudoir Wardrobe Tips:

  1. If you are someone who wants to hide their tummy DO NOT purchase a simple bra and panty set. Purchase a chemise or a teddy.  If you are not 100% in love with your legs buy a garter and stocking set (which ALWAYS) looks hot.
  2. Shoes are ALWAYS important.  Make sure the heels match the lingerie.  I suggest that the heels be AT LEAST 4 inches tall.  I know, fashion hurts, but the results will be well worth the pain.

5.  Practice the Poses You Want

Practice your boudoir poses in front of the mirror before your session.  C’mon now!  Lets all be honest here!  We have all practiced modeling poses in front of the mirror.  I do it with my dog.  I mean it got so serious that my dog actually now knows how to pose in front of the camera! YES!  He will serve face with the best of them!

Okay! LOL Back on track.  Make sure you communicate to your boudoir photographer what types of poses you really want.  I suggest emailing them a link to a Pinterest boudoir board you create as your inspiration for the boudoir session.  Having a visual idea of what YOU want from your session helps both you the photographer out.

I know Pinterest can be a really hard place to find a cohesive set of poses that you like so I suggest checking out the Boudoir Divas 1500 poses e-book#YAAAAAASSSS girl 1500 poses!  What I like the most about this books is it highlights poses for  WOMEN OF EVERY SIZE!  I’m sure you can find at least one in there you like.  Check out the e-book here.  The Divas are friends of mine who also have two other detailed posing guides that I keep in my studio for my clients.  I would suggest purchasing them for your own personal collection too.  Find them HERE!

6.  Remember Why You are Doing This

Remember why you are doing this boudoir session.  What goal did you achieve that deserves such a glorious acknowledgement?

  • Did you lose that final 20 pounds?
  • Perhaps after a year in crossfit you want to show off your new toned body.  You didn’t deadlift for nothing now!
  • Maybe you want to celebrate your woman hood with a maternity session!
  • Are you celebrating a 30th, 40th, or 50th Birthday party and want to embrace your current sexiness?
  • Is this going to be a sensual wedding or anniversary present that you have been secretly planning? You know he’s going to love it!

Whenever you begin to see doubt seeping through just remember why you are doing this.  Keep in mind there are plenty of women who felt exactly like you before their session.  These women came out loving the entire experience.

7. Trust Yourself & Relax

You have to just trust yourself at this point.  You have contacted the photographer and feel confident in their work and vision for your project.  You hired a pro hair and makeup artist and trust in their ability to make you look amazing.  Your nails look fabulous.  You have picked lingerie that you tried on and practiced the poses you want in front of the mirror for the past week.  You are focused on why you are doing this.  Now you have to just trust in yourself.  Just sit back relax while getting pampered by the HMUA as you’re sipping champagne. Take comfort that you are doing something really amazing for you!

What is Boudoir?

What is Boudoir and Why You Should Do It

Wonderland Boudoir is a high-end boudoir photography studio in Dallas, Texas.   We aim at providing fun, safe, and empowering sessions for every woman who walks through our door.  In January, as a vendor for Bridal Show Inc’s Dallas Bridal show, I met tons of women educating them on the fun and excitement of boudoir. In fact, I kept hearing this same thing over and over: “All I have been hearing about is ‘boudoir’!  What exactly is that and why does EVERYONE want to do it?!”

What Is Boudoir?

Boudoir once meant a room built to spend time with one’s husband. For Wonderland, boudoir means defining YOUR sense of sexiness and releasing your inhibitions.  Boudoir should be fun, safe, empowering, and liberating.  Your fantasies should be unlimited. Women have been blessed with beautiful, individual bodies; we should embrace and celebrate our natural beauty.

Why Do Women take Boudoir Pictures?

Boudoir can be done for any number of reasons:

  • Boudoir Presents for Him

Many women host sessions as a wedding gift for their future spouse.  Other popular reasons include anniversary gifts and Valentine’s Day presents.  Imagine giving your lover a collection of beautiful, one of a kind pictures for his eyes only. He'll be hard pressed to match that present!!

  • Boudoir Present for You

Boudoir sessions aren’t limited to gifts for that special someone in your life.  More importantly, boudoir sessions should be for you.  Many women have sessions for themselves as birthday presents.  Others have a session for body change reasons, like maternity photos or reaching your goal weight.  Have a session after you've run your first marathon or you've gone ice skating for the first time, so that you can celebrate all that your body does for you! Do a boudoir session to celebrate YOUR sexy!

  • A Boudoir Present for ALL

They are also great for bachelorette parties and a Girls' Night Out!  Yes, we do host boudoir parties (The Queens Court) for you and up to five of your closest girlfriends, for a fun filled day you won't forget!

Why Should I Have a Boudoir Session?

First and foremost, a boudoir session should be done for you.  These sessions are fun, powerful, and liberating.  Feel like a celebrity and have a team pamper you with hair and makeup.  We then help you pick out the best outfits or lingerie for your desired outcome, and finally you get to do your session.  Wonderland Boudoir helps with posing and making sure you feel comfortable all the way through.   If for some reason you still feel tense, there is always champagne!

Feel Comfortable

We at Wonderland Boudoir know it is intimidating going into a room with a person you don’t know and sharing the most intimate parts of yourself, but there is nothing to be nervous about. We are a fun and understanding team that is here to support you during this session.  We help guide you through the process and teach you how to properly pose to help strengthen the beauty of your photos.  In almost all of the sessions, you will see me posing right along with you!

In Conclusion…

Take the leap and feel liberated by investing in a boudoir session. I have been photographing boudoir sessions for years, but I still LOVE the reactions when women see that they look like THAT GIRL in their photos.

Be that girl.  Get that same feeling.
